About this site

Planet Earth online

Planet Earth online is the free, companion website to the award-winning magazine Planet Earth published and funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). You can subscribe to the quarterly magazine online, or browse through all of the stories on this website.

Planet Earth covers news from across the environmental sciences - whether research is funded directly by NERC or is carried out by NERC's research and collaborative centres. It also covers the work of partner organisations, such as through the £1bn "Living with Environmental Change" programme.

Privacy policy

Cookies

"Cookies" are small pieces of information generated by a web server and stored on your computer, ready for future access. Cookies allow you to personalise web pages, log in to certain areas of a web site or enable/disable certain application features. You can find out more about the way cookies work on http://www.cookiecentral.com.

Whilst you do not need to allow your browser to accept cookies in order to browse the site, you must have cookies enabled if you wish to use the 'content added since last visit' feature.

Most browsers allow you to turn off the cookie function so that web sites cannot store any information on your computer. If you want to know how to do this please look at the help menu on your browser. As described above this will restrict the functionality Planet Earth online can offer.

Usage tracking

We track "user traffic patterns" throughout our site. However, we do not correlate this information with data about individual users. The site does break down overall usage statistics according to a user's domain name, browser type, and MIME type by reading this information from the browser string (information in every user's browser).

We use tracking information mainly to see which browser types and operating systems people are using to access Planet Earth online. This enables us to create an application that works with many different browsers, improving the service we can offer.

By using this site, you consent to our collection and use of this information. NERC reserves the right to revise this policy at our discretion. Please check back on the site as the policy may be revised from time to time without giving you notice.
