Reuters journalist reports from the coldest continent
A journalist from the news agency Reuters reports his encounter with an elephant seal on Lagoon Island today.
Alister Doyle, Reuter's environment correspondent, was accompanying John Loines, a laboratory manager at the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera research station. Loines, a former carpenter, had travelled to the island, four kilometres from the base, to fix some steps on a remote emergency refuge.
The journalist witnessed NERC's robot submarine, Autosub, dive beneath the Antarctic ice shelves last week.
You can also read his account of how a lovesick Polish scientist paid tribute to his beloved in penguin dung. See links.
